Put one foot in front of the other

On Friday, January 8, 2010 Caleb took his first steps unassisted! I was several feet away when I held my arms out to him. Instead of letting go of the table and crawling to me, like he usually does, Caleb let go and took five steps right into my arms! Now, just over two weeks later, he can do this:

Whenever we walk around on campus together, Caleb has to stop to inspect flecks in floor tiles, fossilized gum, cement tree planters, soggy grass, remaining clumps of snow, etc. While I enjoy his excitement and sense of exploration most of the time, I kind of miss the days when I could set him on a blanket for a minute and know he'd still be there when I came back!

Finger Paint

I found a recipe for non-toxic "finger paint" on Saturday (cook water, cornstarch, salt, and sugar on stove top. Then add food coloring). It turned out more like finger paste than paint, but Caleb and I still managed to have fun while Todd was on campus trying to finish a lab.

Step one: Make paints/pastes

Step two: Dressing appropriately

Step three: play with gross stuff

Step four: eat gross stuff

Step five: wait for Mom to clean up the mess

I decided Caleb was done playing after he had consumed half of the paint. His creation is proudly displayed on our fridge :)
